How to Declare

To Major:

  1. Get to know us.  You can explore the major on our website and on the Stanford Bulletin page.  You are also most welcome to reach out to our faculty and peer advisors at any time in the process.  
  2. Apply to the major through AXESS.  (Please do not choose "honors" at the time of application.  Students approved to write honors theses will add that designation in senior year.)
  3. Meet with one of the program's core advisorseither the Program Director, Shelley Fisher Fishkin (sfishkin [at] stanford.edu (sfishkin[at]stanford[dot]edu)), or one of the Program Coordinators, Elizabeth Kessler (ekessler [at] stanford.edu (ekessler[at]stanford[dot]edu)) or Judith Richardson (judithr [at] stanford.edu (judithr[at]stanford[dot]edu))who can guide you in course planning and approve your prospective study plan for the major.  You can download the study plan form here, or pick up a hard copy at the office (Building 460, Room 219).
  4. Submit your approved study plan. The application process is completed when you submit your approved study plan to the  American Studies office (Building 460, Room 219) or via e-mail to Academic Services Administrator, An Nguyen, antnguyn [at] stanford.edu (antnguyn[at]stanford[dot]edu).
  5. Welcome to American Studies! 

To Minor:

  1. Learn about the American Studies minor on our website or the Stanford Bulletin page.  You are also most welcome to reach out to our faculty and peer advisors at any time in the process.  
  2. Apply for the minor through AXESS.
  3. Submit an appropriate study plan to Academic Services Administrator, An Nguyen, via email at antnguyn [at] stanford.edu (antnguyn[at]stanford[dot]ed)u or in person in the American Studies office (Building 460, Room 219) 
  4. Welcome to American Studies!
