Asian American Art, Pasts and Futures

American Studies faculty member Marci Kwon (Art and Art History) has just published    "Asian American Art, Pasts and Futures," a special section in Panorama: The Journal of Historians of American Art co-edited by Kwon and Aleesa Alexander, Curator of American Art at the Cantor Arts Center.  The section builds on their  work as co-directors of the Cantor's Asian American Art Initiative, and includes nine essays on topics including the display of Chinese American women at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition; Hallmark greeting card design; the racialization of labor in modernity; and the entwinement of scent and colonialism.  Prof. Kwon notes that  "The section is bookended by a critical introduction on the contested term 'Asian American art' and the limits of visibility, and a brilliant conclusion by Aleesa about the AAAI, and Asian American art in museums."
