Laura Jones

Director Of Heritage Services And University Archaeologist For Stanford University

Laura Jones is the University Archaeologist and Executive Director of Heritage Services for Stanford University.  Dr. Jones is responsible for stewardship of the university’s nearly 200 archaeological sites and advises the university on preservation of historic buildings and landscapes as well. The work of Heritage Services is deeply local, shaped by the contested terrains of cultural studies and the applied practice of heritage preservation. Laura’s team practices “community based” archaeology (closely related to the field of public history). This perspective anchors inquiries within a collaborative relationship with stakeholder and descendant communities.  They have recently completed excavations at the Arboretum Chinese Labor Quarters, cataloguing of collections from the Buelna-Rodriguez Adobe Site, and are just launching a new initiative on indigenous land stewardship practices in partnership with the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe.
